Airdrie
As of the 2010 municipal census, Airdrie’s population was just shy of 40,000. Due to its proximity to Calgary, Airdrie's population has been exploding in recent years. First established as a railway village in 1889, Airdrie was named after the Scottish city which bears the same name. Not unlike Calgary, Airdrie is divided into quadrants, with the majority of the city's residents living in the established southeast and northeast quadrants.
Airdrie is largely a commuter town and may also be referred to as a “bedroom community”, or “bedroom suburb”. These terms suggest that residents tend to sleep in these neighbourhoods but work in Calgary and that the community may have little commercial or industrial activity beyond a small amount of retail, oriented toward serving the residents.
